Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on Saturday.
Underlining the need for the highest cooperation between Tehran and Ankara, Zarif said, “high-ranking officials at the Islamic Republic of Iran attach a great significance to relations with Turkey.”
Given the regional issues, Zarif underlined that Iran and Turkey can cooperate in presenting a successful model of proximity among religions, rather than religious division.
Erdogan, for his part, emphasized the need to expand Tehran-Ankara relations, adding, “this can serve the interests of the two neighbors and contribute to regional peace and stability.”
Calling ISIL a common threat, Turkish president asserted the necessity of consultation and dialog with Iran to find proper solutions for regional crises.
“Western countries are seeking the weakening of Muslim countries; Iran and Turkey have a heavy responsibility in regard to regional problems,” added Erdogan.
He further called for expansion of economic ties between Tehran and Ankara and once again invited President Hassan Rouhani to visit Turkey.
